Atomic bomb exhibit to open in St. Petersburg

NAGASAKI — An exhibition of materials related to the U.S. atomic bombings of Japan in 1945 is set to run in St. Petersburg, Russia, from Aug. 29 to Oct. 28, a Nagasaki museum said Thursday.

The traveling exhibition has been organized annually by the Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims since 2005. The upcoming exhibition will be the third in a nuclear weapons state following two exhibitions in the United States in 2005 and 2006.

The exhibition will be held at the Saint-Petersburg Medical Academy of Postgraduate Studies, which maintains academic exchanges with Nagasaki University on medical treatments for radiation-induced illnesses.

Among the 20 items from the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is a wall clock that stopped at 11:02 a.m., the time when the bomb exploded over Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945, and a school uniform worn at the time of the attack.

Around 50 photos related to the bombings and a video of A-bomb survivors' testimonies with Russian voice-overs will also be on display.

Joji Fukahori, 80, from Nagasaki, is set to talk about his experience with the bombing, which killed his mother, two younger brothers and a sister.

"Sixty-six years have passed so my memories are gradually fading, but I want people to understand the cruelty of war and the atomic bombing," he said.
