Shimane generator to be down one month

HIROSHIMA — It will take about a month to fix a thermal power generation unit at a plant in Hamada, Shimane Prefecture, where operations were halted Aug. 10 due to a steam leak, Chugoku Electric Power Co. officials said Thursday.

The 1 million kw No. 1 generation unit at the Misumi thermal power plant will be able to restart operations in or after mid-September, the officials said.

The suspension will not necessitate a cut in the utility's power supply in its service area, they said, adding it will also continue to provide up to 720,000 kw to Kansai Electric Power Co. during August.

But one Chugoku official said, "under the current situation, we will find it difficult to increase our supply" to Kepco, which has been receiving other utilities' surplus power due to trouble at one of its nuclear plants.

The No. 1 unit stopped its operations after steam was found to be leaking from a damaged pipe for delivering the steam from the unit's boiler to a turbine.

The Chugoku officials said it will take time for the pipe replacement and welding work, adding the unit must clear a check by outside inspectors before being allowed to restart.

Meanwhile, Shikoku Electric Power Co., another utility supplying surplus power to Kepco, said it has suspended the operations of its No. 1 thermal power generation unit at its Sakaide plant in Sakaide, Kagawa Prefecture, due to a malfunction.

The Takamatsu-based utility hopes to fix the trouble at the 296,000 kw unit and restart its operations by the end of August.

While the utility is seeking to identify the cause of the trouble, it suspects that a tube for generating steam at the unit's boiler was damaged, causing a steam leak.

The suspension cuts the utility's overall electricity supply capacity for this summer to 5.95 million kw with the surplus power capacity margin falling to 4.4 percent from the presuspension 8.9 percent, it said. But a Shikoku Electric official said, "We will be able to supply electricity to customers in our service area in a stable manner."
