DisneySea celebrates 10-year mark

CHIBA — Dressed in colorful outfits, the staff at Tokyo DisneySea welcomed visitors to the amusement park on its 10th anniversary Sunday.

Operated by Oriental Land Co., the park kicked off a series of events to commemorate the anniversary, including a new show in which Disney characters dance on boats. The show will be performed twice a day through March 19.

"I really liked Disney," said an excited Mahiro Okiyama, 7, who came from Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, with his parents.

"We really looked forward to seeing shows here. We will come again next year with my children," said Kuniyuki, Mahiro's 42-year-old father.

Opened on Sept. 4, 2001, Tokyo DisneySea — Disney's first marine theme park in the world — is situated next to Tokyo Disneyland on Tokyo Bay in Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture.

The two parks were closed for a month and a half after the area was hit by the March 11 earthquake.

But visitor numbers returned to the year-before level in July before increasing on a year-on-year basis in August, the operator said.
